Challenging retrofit solution
for Genesis

The challenge
Owned by Genesis Energy Limited, Huntly Power Station is the largest thermal power station in New Zealand and has 4 gas / coal-fired generating units with an installed generation capacity of 950 MW. Leakages in several insulators of the oil-insulated outdoor sealing ends led to a replacement request by the customer. However, the existing HV oil-insulated cable system itself needed to remain in use due to cost-related factors.

Our solution
Brugg Cables developed a professional retrofit solution, which included engineering, logistics, tools and on-site installation. The spare parts used were adapted to the requirements of the existing oil-insulated cable system. The outage period for the Brugg Cables retrofit works had been only 9 days.

Genesis are very impressed with Brugg’s innovation, design, planning and implementation of this retrofit cable sealing end project. The solution avoided the need for a costly 220 kV oil-insulated cable replacement and a longer outage duration. Thanks to Brugg, this retrofit was successfully completed with minimal disruption to plant operations.

Cable diagnostics

The challenge
AVU Netz GmbH owns and operates electricity, natural gas and water networks in the Ennepe-Ruhr district. The line networks comprise 3,513 km of electricity, 991 km of gas and 1,249 km of water pipes. The assignment was to inspect an approx. 6.3-km-long XLPE cable route dating back to 2014, the utility company’s longest cable section within the grid. The section is connected by 5 joints with link boxes. The cable start consists of outdoor terminations on a switch panel and the cable end of dry GIS terminations.

Our solution
The diagnostics package included visual inspection of terminations and link boxes, sheath testing of all three phases, partial discharge measurements, and thermographic analysis. AVU Netz GmbH supported the work during the system shutdown. A suspected sheath fault was identified as an earth fault on one outdoor termination. Brugg Cables advised repairing fibre optic outlets and hood sleeves and replaced defective insulators found during inspection. Thermography showed no anomalies. Brugg Cables delivered a detailed report and supported repairs and ongoing system monitoring.

The diagnostics mix enabled us to determine the operating status of the cable system and identify any potential risks.
